About Nuwa Psychology
Nuwa Psychology is a team of psychologists devoted to understanding the complexity of the human mind and helping people create meaningful psychological change.
Who we are
We are licensed psychologists who practice psychotherapy, study how therapy works, and train the next generation of clinicians.
Our work is grounded first in the therapy room — the experience of sitting with real people navigating anxiety, loss, uncertainty, and change. Years of clinical practice have taught us how complex emotional life can be, and how meaningful change rarely comes from formulas alone.
Because we are also researchers and educators, we stay closely engaged with the evolving science of psychotherapy. This keeps our work thoughtful, rigorous, and continually refined.
We built this clinic intentionally as a place where deep clinical expertise and careful scholarship come together — so that therapy can be effective and deeply human, tailored to the person in front of us.
Our Mission
Our mission is to support the changes you want to make and walk alongside you toward a life that feels more meaningful, authentic, free, and alive.
Our Values
You Are More Than Your Symptoms
We look beneath the surface to understand what is truly driving your difficulties, working with what you feel in the room — not only what you describe.
Your Goals, Your Pace
You bring what matters. We build the work around that. The therapeutic relationship is not a backdrop — it is the foundation for meaningful change.
The Whole Person, Not Just the Problem
Your history, your body, your relationships, your culture — all of it shapes who you are, and all of it matters here.
Cultural Humility
Every person carries a history shaped by culture, identity, and lived experience. We approach this with genuine respect and ongoing reflection — including awareness of our own limitations and assumptions.
Held to High Standards
As licensed psychologists, researchers, and educators who train future therapists, we bring scientific rigor, ethical responsibility, and professional accountability to every aspect of our practice.
Founder & Clinical Director
Dr. Xiaochen Luo
Ph.D., Licensed Clinical Psychologist
I’m a licensed clinical psychologist with over a decade of experience working with adults navigating anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, trauma/loss, eating disorders, and the quieter struggles that don’t always have a name.
My work is relational at its core. I pay close attention to how emotions move through you in the room, how your patterns with others show up, and how your cultural background and personal history have shaped who you are. I don’t fit people into treatment models — I build the work around you.
I’m also a psychotherapy researcher and assistant professor at Santa Clara University, where I study what actually makes psychotherapy effective and train the next generation of clinicians.
I see clients in California and New York, in English and Mandarin.
